I’m proud to announce the arrival of the fourth edition of the all-color 100 Classic Hikes: Northern California!
I have been hard at work on this completely revised and updated edition since 2015 and I’m very pleased with the results. Mountaineers Books, my publisher, did an outstanding job of editing my writing and hiring expert cartographer Ben Pease to create beautiful and detailed maps, and the print quality is excellent.
I rehiked nearly all the trails, and I added eight new ones. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun! Seems like such a long time ago that my then-coauthor and always my big brother Marc Soares and I were holding the first edition in our hands back in 1994.
Where you can buy the book…
Northern California Bookstores
Barnes and Noble now has the book at most locations, and you’ll also find it in quite a few independent bookstores.
Outdoor Stores
Some independent outdoor stores have ordered the book, as have many REI stores. Many more will do so over the next month or two.
Visitor Centers
Parks and ranger stations often have visitor centers that sell books. Several are ordering, but their process takes more time. I hope to be in most visitor centers by mid- to late summer. It’s already at the visitor center at Whiskeytown Lake National Recreation Area.

Day Hiking: Mount Shasta, Lassen & Trinity Alps Regions Also Available
The release of Day Hiking: Mount Shasta, Lassen & Trinity Alps Regions was my big news last month. I worked on both books at the same time, and now they are both coming out at about the same time. The Day Hiking book focuses on the upper part of Northern California, from Red Bluff to Yreka (including Castle Crags State Park) and from the Trinity Alps through Mount Shasta to Lassen Volcanic National Park.
