New Editions of My Two Hiking Guidebooks

by John Soares on August 11, 2015

The Mountaineers Books publishes hiking guidebooks and many other outdoors titles.I’m very happy to announce that I’ve recently signed contracts with my publisher, The Mountaineers Books, for a fourth edition of 100 Classic Hikes in Northern California and an expansion of 75 Hikes in California’s Mount Shasta and Lassen Volcanic National Park Regions into an entirely new book.

100 Classic Hikes in Northern California, Fourth Edition

This book first came out in 1994, and it shifted to all color in 2000 with the second edition. I took over the book from my coauthor and brother Marc Soares for the third edition in 2008, and I’m also flying solo on the fourth edition.

I’m replacing about 10-15 hikes, in some cases because the old hikes are now less attractive (often because of major fires), or because I’ve found new trails that I know you’ll like even better.

Day Hiking California’s Shasta-Trinity-Lassen Region

That’s a tentative title, but it accurately reflects the expanded territory of the new book. The current edition of 75 Hikes in California’s Mount Shasta and Lassen Volcanic National Park Regions covers:

  • Mount Shasta Area
  • Trinity Divide Mountains to the west of Mount Shasta
  • Castle Crags State Park
  • Lava Beds National Monument
  • Burney Falls
  • Hat Creek Valley
  • Thousand Lakes Wilderness
  • Lassen Volcanic National Park
  • Caribou Wilderness
  • Ishi Wilderness

The new and expanded Day Hiking book will include the top hikes in all of the above areas, plus:

  • Trinity Alps Wilderness
  • Russian Wilderness
  • Marble Mountain Wilderness
  • Shasta Valley and surroundings
  • expanded coverage of Mount Shasta and the Trinity Divide
  • Shasta Lake
  • Whiskeytown Lake
  • Redding and vicinity

There will be about 125 hikes total, and even though all are day hikes, many are suitable for 2-3 day backpacking trips, and I’ll include info on campsites for backpackers.

Are the Current Editions Still Good?

Of course they are. Nearly all of the information is still accurate, although there will definitely be updates in the new editions.

You can buy them at many brick and mortar stores such as Barnes and Noble, REI, and local bookstores. You can also order them on Amazon:

How Am I Doing the New Editions?

I’m revisiting all the trailheads and double-checking that all driving directions are correct, plus I’m getting GPS coordinates of all trailheads.

I’m also hiking most of the trails that I’m picking up from the previous edition, and I’m doing every inch of every trail that’s new.

And I’m taking tons of new photos and shooting videos of many of key destinations. (Check out my Hiking The West Youtube channel for current vids.)

When Will the New Books Come Out?

No earlier than the spring of 2017. I have a lot of research and writing to do, and The Mountaineers Books needs ample time to put out a professional product.

I’ll post updates about the books here on the blog. Stay tuned, and subscribe in the sidebar to the right, if you haven’t already.

Do you have a catalogue and price list? Could consider selling them in our campground store on Highway 49 near Camptonville and Downieville.

Thanks Don. I’m sending your contact info to the sales department at The Mountaineers Books.

John, thanks for sharing this link on Twitter.

The first thing I thought when you said you were going to hike the trails again was it would be cool to do a vlog.

You already have one. I’ll subscribe to get your updates.

You’re going to be pretty busy but it will be worth it.

Sara, I’m way behind on updating my Youtube channel. I have a bunch of new vids to share, but I want to edit them before I post.

And yes, I’ll be busy!

It is always the case with things we do online huh? Always another project or piece of content to upload or write.

Congratulations on your accomplishments! Camping in the Northwest US is on my “bucket list.” You’ve completely inspired me to figure out how to make this possible!
