What Exactly Is National Trails Day?

It’s a national program run by the American Hiking Society to promote awareness and improvement of trails throughout the United States. Different public, private, and nonprofit groups run a variety of events that range from trail maintenance and construction to guided hikes.

So What’s Happening in My Area?

Have a look at this interactive map. Click through to find specific events anywhere in the United States (there are over two dozen in northern California). You’ll likely need to Google an event to get specific information on exactly what is happening, and when and where.

More About National Trails Day

The first event occurred in 1993, and recent years have included as many as 2000 events with over 150,000 participants. You can get all the details on this timeline.

What Are You Doing on June 6th?

Will you be going to an event? Tell us in the comments. I’ll likely be off hiking in the mountains, so I’ll be participating informally.

I’ve been to a couple of National Trails Day events in the past with the Mount Shasta Trail Association.
