Many combat veterans develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which often disrupts their lives and the lives of those they love.
Gene Burnett is a talented musician and songwriter who is also my tai chi teacher in Ashland, Oregon. He just finished a very touching collaborative video of his song “If There Was a Wall” that focuses on the struggles of veterans trying to cope with the psychological wounds of war.
My family members who have served in the U.S. military:
- My grandfather, John Soares, fought in the U.S. Army in France during World War One. He was a recent immigrant from the Azores Islands (Portugal) and was still learning English.
- My father, John Severin Soares, served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War Two.
- My oldest brother, Eric Soares, served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during and after the Vietnam War.
- My niece, Kasey Brown, currently serves in the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer USS Bainbridge.
To all who have served in the military: Thank You.

Thanks for posting this John. War always cost more than we think it will. I’ve seen it first hand in the lives of several friends over the years…Hopefully, this video will shed a little light on the subject.
You guys did a great job on this Gene. I hope it goes viral.
This video is fantastic! Let’s get it out there!
Mary, do what you can to spread it: e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, any way you can.
I’m just watching Pacific series from the TV and it’s really important to realize that the freedom we now have is not self evidence. I’m learning a lot from the tv series and movies of the time when I wasn’t born and what the world was during the world wars. Hope we never go into war with any near countries here.
