Final Tally on Siskiyou County Wildfires in 2008

The Mount Shasta Herald has an article summarizing the wildfires that hit Siskiyou County in 2008. Much of the Klamath National Forest and the Shasta-Trinity National Forest lies within Siskiyou County’s boundaries, and Siskiyou County holds many of my favorite Northern California hiking trails.

More than 317,000 acres burned in 308 wildfires this summer in Siskiyou County, authorities said this week as they closed the books on one of the most destructive fire seasons in recent memory. More than $125 million was spent battling fires on federal forest lands, while state officials are still tallying the costs of fighting fires on private property.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officially declared the end of fire season in Siskiyou County on Nov. 1, lifting all burning suspensions and reducing staffing through the winter months.
The Klamath National Forest was hit hard as well, spokeswoman Davida Carnahan said – 92 fires burned 192,038 acres on the Klamath and Six Rivers national forests this season. The figure includes both forests, as fires on the Klamath crossed into Six Rivers territory, and vice versa. More than $125 million was spent fighting fires on those acres.
