Hiking trail snow-free in summer and early fall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>2025 Free Entrance Days to Northern California National Parks and Monuments<\/h2>\n<p>Here are the six days in 2025 that you can save your hard-earned money and not have to pay a entrance fee to visit Northern California national parks, national monuments, and other federal lands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Monday, January 20, 2025<\/strong>: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saturday, April 19, 2025: <\/strong>First Day of National Park Week<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thursday, June 19, 2025: <\/strong>Juneteenth National Independence Day<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monday, August 4, 2025<\/strong>: Great American Outdoors Day<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saturday, September 27, 2025<\/strong>: National Public Lands Day<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tuesday, November 11, 2025<\/strong>: Veterans Day<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2025 Fees at National Parks and Monuments<\/h2>\n<p>Entrance fees have gone up substantially in recent years.\u00a0 It costs $35 for a one-day vehicle pass for Yosemite National Park, and $30 for Lassen Volcanic National Park, so taking advantage of these free-entrance days can save you some serious money.<\/p>\n<h2>Six Federal Agencies Honor 2025 Free Entrance Days<\/h2>\n<p>These are the six federal agencies that honor the no-fee 2025 days listed above:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National Park Service (NPS)<\/li>\n<li>US Forest Service (USFS)<\/li>\n<li>US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFW)<\/li>\n<li>Bureau of Land Management (BLM)<\/li>\n<li>Bureau of Reclamation<\/li>\n<li>US Army Corps of Engineers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Hiking Northern California National Parks and Monuments<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a list of the Northern California national parks and monuments and related federal entities that are particularly attractive to hikers who want to hit the trails on the 2025 fee-free days. Make sure you check trail conditions and restrictions, and be aware that higher elevation trails are usually snow-bound from late fall to early summer. Make sure you follow all current regulations, which you&#8217;ll find on the parks&#8217; websites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong><strong>some of these national parks and monuments are very crowded on no-fee days<\/strong> (think Yosemite National Park and Muir Woods National Monument), so take that into account if you prefer <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2020\/06\/09\/solitude-hiking-tips\/\">more solitude when you hike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Yosemite National Park<\/h3>\n<p>Definitely one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/sixtyandme.com\/seniors-guide-national-parks\/\">popular national parks in the country<\/a>, and for good reason. Tons of hiking opportunities in all parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yose\/index.htm\">Yosemite National Park<\/a>, including some on\/near the valley floor that are low enough in elevation to be accessible much of the year. At 4,800 feet elevation, Vernal Falls is hikable on most national park free-entrance days.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Lassen Volcanic National Park<\/h3>\n<p>One of my favorite spots on the planet and also the host of many of the hikes in my two books <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/day-hiking-mount-shasta-lassen-trinity-alps-trails\/\"><em>Day Hiking: Mount Shasta, Lassen &amp; Trinity Alps Regions<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/hiking-guides\/100-classic-hikes-in-northern-california\/\"><em>100 Classic Hikes: Northern California<\/em><\/a>, fourth edition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/lavo\/index.htm\">Lassen Volcanic National Park<\/a> is a must-visit. Note that the <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/09\/hiking-trails-lassen-volcanic-national-park\/\">hiking trails<\/a> are all above 6000 feet and are only accessible from mid-summer to mid-autumn.<\/p>\n<h3>Lava Beds National Monument<\/h3>\n<p>Tucked away in the northeast corner of the state, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/labe\/index.htm\">Lava Beds National Monument<\/a> has a dozen-plus <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/09\/whitney-butte-trail-hiking-lava-beds\/\">hiking trails<\/a>, plus many opportunities to explore the lava-tube caves. The trails and caves are mostly accessible year-round, although there is some snow in winter.<\/p>\n<h3>Whiskeytown National Recreation Area<\/h3>\n<p>Low-elevation and accessible year-round, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/whis\/index.htm\">Whiskeytown National Recreation Area<\/a> has a beautiful lake and lots of trails. Much of it burned by the 2018 Carr Fire, but many trails trails have reopened. The hiking here is fantastic and is the subject of my newest book <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2V0YsYr\"><em>Hike the Parks: Redwood National &amp; State Parks<\/em><\/a>. (Many of the <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/26\/highway-101-north-coast-redwood-trails-beaches\/\">best hikes are near Highway 101<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3>Point Reyes National Seashore<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/pore\/index.htm\">Point Reyes National Seashore<\/a> is always free (no entrance fee) and is always worth a visit for the wide variety of paths that explore the shoreline and nearby.<\/p>\n<h3>Muir Woods National Monument<\/h3>\n<p>You can hike through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/muwo\/index.htm\">stately redwood groves<\/a>, through mixed forest, and along open slopes in Muir Woods National Monument. You also have the option to explore nearby Mount Tamalpais State Park.<\/p>\n<h3>Golden Gate National Recreation Area<\/h3>\n<p>Golden Gate National Recreation Area includes many trails at beaches and important historical areas in multiple parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/goga\/index.htm\">San Francisco Bay Are<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/goga\/index.htm\">a<\/a>. Try to pick trails that are less popular or remote, and try to get to the trailhead early.<\/p>\n<p>Want to camp? Reserve as early as you can and be aware that you&#8217;ll have to pay the normal camping fee. Go to the specific park website for details on making reservations. Same goes if you want to stay in a hotel or motel. Book now!<\/p>\n<h2>Consider Buying an America the Beautiful Pass&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>That will get you\u00a0 into all (or nearly all) federal lands that charge entrance fees. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/planyourvisit\/passes.htm\">Details here<\/a>, with these main options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Annual Pass<\/strong>: costs $80 in 2025; this is what I get most years<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Senior Pass<\/strong>: $20 annual or $80 lifetime for those 62 and older<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>And There Are Free Passes to the National Parks<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Military Annual Pass<\/strong>: free for active-duty military personnel and dependents, including people serving in the Reserve and National Guard<\/li>\n<li><strong>Access Pass<\/strong>: free for those with permanent disabilities<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fourth Grade Pass<\/strong>: free entrance for fourth graders through the summer past fourth grade; includes other people in the vehicle or up to three other accompanying people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Permanent Free Entrance for Veterans and Gold Star Families<\/h2>\n<p>This policy went into effect in late 2020 and applies in 2025 and beyond.
