{"id":664,"date":"2010-05-12T04:09:32","date_gmt":"2010-05-12T11:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/?p=664"},"modified":"2022-05-14T06:16:08","modified_gmt":"2022-05-14T13:16:08","slug":"pacific-crest-trail-film-national-geographic-channel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/12\/pacific-crest-trail-film-national-geographic-channel\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacific Crest Trail Film by National Geographic Premiers in Siskiyou County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a title=\"Mount Shasta Trail Association\" href=\"http:\/\/mountshastatrailassociation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mount Shasta Trail Association<\/a> is sponsoring a big event up in my neck of the woods, which <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/25\/pacific-crest-trail-northern-california-section-hiking\/\">includes many pretty sections of the Pacific Crest Trail in Northern California<\/a>: the premier screening of a new National Geographic Channel film on the Pacific Crest Trail at College of the Siskiyous on May 19. Here are the details from a MSTA press release:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Pacific Crest Trail Association, in partnership with the Mt Shasta Trail Association and the College of the Siskiyous, is pleased to announce the free public premier screening of the visually stunning National Geographic Channel\u2019s new film, \u201cAmerica\u2019s Wild Places,\u201d starring the Pacific Crest Trail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThis adventurous film presents an array of many of the spectacular scenes hikers can encounter on this 2,650 mile-long footpath that courses from Campo, California, at the U.S.\/Mexican border, to Manning Park in British Columbia, Canada,\u201d says MSTA President Joe Wirth. \u201cFor outdoor enthusiasts who don\u2019t have the time or endurance to hike the entire route, this is the best chance you&#8217;ll have for learning why the trail was created, how it is used today, and what it offers to hikers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Some of the more diverse features that can be encountered along the route from the south to the north include the cactus gardens of Anza Borrego Desert, the glaciated peaks of the High Sierra, Forester Pass at 13,153-foot elevation (highest point on the PCT), Devil\u2019s Postpile, Crater Lake National Park, Three Sisters Wilderness, Mount Hood Wilderness, Cascade Locks (lowest point on the trail), Bridge of the Gods, Mount Adams, Snoqualmie Pass, and the North Cascades National Park.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">When added up, the total elevation change along the entire route is 300,000 feet. Whew! Each year about 300 \u201cthru-hikers\u201d attempt to do the entire route in about four months, and they must deal with setting up food caches, severe weather, dehydration, and pesky black bears. Hikers must be prepared for climate extremes from scorching deserts in the south to drenching rainforests in the north. Displays of sprawling wildflowers create colorful breaks between towering stands of solemn old-growth forests.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201dThis special screening is an opportunity for you to see the Pacific Crest Trail like you&#8217;ve never seen it before, even if you\u2019ve hiked it!\u201d says Wirth. \u201cAnd if you&#8217;re considering getting out onto the PCT, this film will only motivate you further to make your PCT experience happen! We have 120 miles of the PCT in Siskiyou County, and <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2022\/05\/12\/burney-falls-hiking-trails\/\">the trek from Burney Falls<\/a> to the Oregon Border totals a challenging 275 miles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Liz Bergeron, Executive Director of the Pacific Crest Trail Association, will be on hand to answer questions, and a dedicated, hard working PCT trail work crew will explain the challenges of creating and maintaining the trail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Program time and date:<\/strong> 7:00 PM, Wednesday May 19th.<br \/>\n<strong>Place:<\/strong> the COS campus in Weed: Building 3, Room 3, the Life Sciences Building, adjacent to Parking Lot A.<br \/>\n<strong>Admission:<\/strong> Free.<br \/>\n<strong>Food and Drink:<\/strong> Coffee and desserts will be served.<br \/>\n<strong>More information:<\/strong> 926-2858<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Gumboot Lake drainage from the Pacific Crest Trail west of Mount Shasta.
