In the next eight days, they climbed and descended 8,500 vertical feet while crossing the Trinity Alps and its formidable Sawtooth Ridge &#8211; including in blizzards that dumped 2 feet of snow and set off multiple avalanches in their paths.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Who Are Those Mount Shasta Area Guys?<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve met two of &#8217;em, and it&#8217;s such a small area up here where we all live that I&#8217;d likely recognize the third:<\/p>\n<p>*Ray Pettengell<\/p>\n<p>*Dennis Campbell<\/p>\n<p>*Chet Kyle<\/p>\n<h2>What Was Their Trinity Alps Wilderness Route?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Started at Big Flat by <strong>Coffee Creek<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hiked to <strong>Lower Caribou Lake<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Cross-country along the <strong>Sawtooth Ridge<\/strong> to the gap between <strong>Caesar Peak<\/strong> and <strong>Thompson Peak<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Down the ridge to <strong>Canyon Creek Lakes<\/strong>, and then out Canyon Creek valley to their car at the trailhead<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ve hiked to all of these places, some multiple times, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/26\/trinity-alps-backpacking-trails-caribou-lake-sawtooth-ridge-emerald-lake-morris-meadows\/\">Caribou Lakes<\/a> and\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/26\/canyon-creek-lakes-trinity-alps-boulder-creek\/\">Canyon Creek Lakes<\/a> are prominently featured in <a title=\"100 Classic Hikes in Northern California\" href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/hiking-guides\/100-classic-hikes-in-northern-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>100 Classic Hikes in Northern California<\/em><\/a>.
