Several representatives from local non-profit agencies, local companies, and\u00a0government agencies described the groundwater and surface water characteristics of the Shasta Valley watershed, the <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2021\/05\/20\/mccloud-falls-trail-hiking-waterfalls\/\">McCloud River watershed<\/a>, and the Upper Sacramento River watershed.<\/p>\n<p>Moderated by environmental education expert Meadow Barr, the presentation\u00a0was an\u00a0interesting and informative\u00a0mix of science and policy, with a major focus on protecting water resources and local fish poulations, and restoring riparian and meadow vegetation.<\/p>\n<p>Hikers need to pay attention to water. Many of our favorite hikes travel along streams, and we want\u00a0the waterways\u00a0healthy and vibrant. Of course, many hikers also fish and thus have a special interest in helping streams. The presenters discussed the current situation of Coho and Chinook salmon in the Shasta River and the threats facing redband trout in the McCloud area.<\/p>\n<p>One of the presenters, Dr. Rene Henery of the <a title=\"Upper Sacramento River Exchange\" href=\"http:\/\/www.riverexchange.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Upper Sacramento River Exchange<\/a>, has created an excellent on-line slide presentation of Mount Shasta&#8217;s watersheds.
