Areas designated as wilderness are generally characterized as undeveloped federal land retaining its primeval character and influence, and protected and managed to preserve its natural condition.

The land is made up of two parcels of 160 acres each. One was formerly private timber land deep within the Trinity Alps Wilderness in Trinity County, midway between the city of Redding and the Pacific coastal city of Arcata. The other was formerly private property within the Mt. Shasta Wilderness in Siskiyou County, northeast of Redding and east of the communities of Weed, Dunsmuir and Mt. Shasta.

Trinity Alps Land Acquisition

The Trinity Alps property is high up in Coffee Creek near its intersection with Granite Creek. The Trust’s acquisition and subsequent donation of the land will serve to protect a pristine wilderness. Reopening it as a timber property would have resulted in reopening road access in the surrounding area, damaging otherwise protected wilderness by degrading the viewshed and impacting protected water resources that provide habitat and water supply to the Trinity River drainage. Popular hiking trails in the area follow Granite and Coffee Creeks.

“If we had not been able to acquire it and donate to the U. S. Forest Service, the former owner would not have had the option to realize the economic value of the land, while preserving it as wilderness when the time came for his family to part with this land,” said Reid Haughey, president of The Wilderness Land Trust.

Mount Shasta Wilderness Land Acquisition

The Mt. Shasta area property was one of the few remaining inholding properties in the Mt. Shasta Wilderness. An inholding is privately owned property within the boundaries of publicly owned land. When approached by The Trust, the owners were excited to have the opportunity to receive a fair value for their property and to permanently protect its wilderness values. The Trust purchased the property in 2007.

“Forest Service staff were concerned about the possibility of a roaded destination within the Mt. Shasta Wilderness and considered the opportunity to protect this inholding important to pursue and vital to protecting wilderness values in the surrounding Mt. Shasta Wilderness. The Trust was happy to work with the Forest Service to make this acquisition happen and eliminate another threat to our cherished wilderness,” Haughey said.

“We are greatly indebted to the Wilderness Land Trust for their contributions to our Wilderness lands,” Sharon Heywood, Shasta-Trinity National Forest Supervisor, said. “Their efforts to acquire these pristine areas and turn them over to us for protection and management demonstrates a genuine commitment to Wilderness preservation. Our partnership with the Trust ensures future generations will be able to enjoy and appreciate these lands in their wild and primeval state.”

The United States Congress designated the Mt. Shasta Wilderness in 1984 and it now has a total of approximately 34,000 acres. The area was formerly known as the Salmon-Trinity Alps Primitive Area and is located 50 miles west of Redding. Drained in the south by the Trinity River and in the north by the Salmon River, the area is dominated by some 55 lakes, scattered stands of timber and large meadows shadowed by peaks with elevations up to 9,000 feet. The Trinity Alps Wilderness contains a total of 550 miles of maintained trails, including 17 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail that run through the northern part of the wilderness.

Mount Shasta dominates the landscape for several hundred miles in all directions. The mountain looms 14,162 feet, a beautiful snow-cloaked massif, second only to Mount Rainer in height among the Cascade Range volcanoes. Although the last documented eruption occurred in 1786, geologists classify Shasta as an active volcano. Most of the wilderness lies on the upper slopes of the mountain. Below the seven glaciers that drape the mountain’s slopes, there are ancient lava flows, a hot sulphur spring, and waterfalls tumbling down deep canyons cut through rugged buttes. Stunted and picturesque red and white fir and whitebark pine grow near the treeline (around 8,000 feet). They preside above a forest of red fir and mixed conifers that include hemlock, cedar, sugar pine, Jeffrey pine, white fir and Douglas fir, with an understory of shrubs. On the north side, where lava once flowed, aspen, mountain mahogany and juniper thrive. Meadows below timberline explode with wildflower color in late Summer. Deer and black bears live here with an abundance of ground squirrels and coyotes.

The United States Congress designated the Trinity Alps Wilderness in 1984. With the recent additions made possible by The Wilderness Trust, it now has a total of 525,477 acres, all jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.

The Wilderness Land Trust is a small, highly specialized nonprofit organization established to buy and protect wilderness land. Since it was founded in 1992, the non-profit organization has preserved more than 342 parcels comprising of more than 31,000 acres of wilderness inholdings in 75 designated and proposed wilderness areas. The Wilderness Land Trust, a 501 (c)(3) organization, has offices in California, Colorado and Washington State.

The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is the largest forest in California with a diverse landscape ranging from 1,000 to 14,162 feet. The 2.1 million acre forest encompasses five wilderness areas, hundreds of mountain lakes and 6,278 miles of streams and rivers.

– – – –

CONTACT: Karin Evans, Administrative Director, 970-963-6068, karin@wildernesslandtrust.org

The Wilderness Land Trust just reported two important land acquisitions in two of my favorite California wilderness areas: the Trinity Alps Wilderness and the Mount Shasta Wilderness, which both have a lot of hiking trails.
