This post discusses why you should use hashtags, best practices for their use, and the best ones to use for hiking and backpacking and other related trail\/outdoors\/adventure activities.<\/p>\n

What is a Hashtag?<\/h2>\n

Simply put: any term proceeded by a # symbol<\/a>. It is always preceded by a space, and there are no spaces between words following the # symbol. They came into significant use and into the public consciousness when Twitter began hyperlinking them in 2009. They quickly became prominent and soon spread to other social media networks.<\/p>\n

Why Use Hiking and Backpacking Hashtags?<\/h2>\n

There are three main reasons. First, they provide emphasis and draw the eye of the viewer, making it more likely they will take an action desired by you, likely clicking on the blog post link in your tweet.<\/p>\n

Second, they are clickable, meaning users can click on one in your Twitter or Instagram post and then find other posts that use the same tag.<\/p>\n

Third, they are searchable, meaning users can search Twitter or Instagram for specific hashtags and then get a list of all posts using that tag.<\/p>\n

\"InstagramHashtags work best on Instagram<\/a> and on Twitter<\/a> and Facebook, where their use is widely accepted and the platforms have made it easy to share and search with them.<\/p>\n

Other networks also use them, but for various reasons they are not as important. LinkedIn has recently starting using hashtags also<\/a>, but since it’s primarily a business networking site, it’s not as useful for recreational trail users.<\/p>\n

Hiking and Backpacking Hashtag Best Practices<\/h2>\n

\"TwitterOn Twitter, studies show that using only one or two tags will result in the highest number of clicks on links in a tweet. As the number of tags go up, click rates go down.<\/p>\n

However, the opposite is true on Instagram. Studies show that the optimal number of tags is around 8-12.<\/p>\n

Of course, make sure you only use those that are truly relevant to your post.<\/p>\n
