It&#8217;s taught by my friend Charlie Unkefer, and it <strong>begins at College of the Siskiyous on August 24th, 2011<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Backpacking and Hiking Class at College of the Siskiyous<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the press release:<\/p>\n<p>Take the next step outdoors with College of the Siskiyous new Backpacking and Hiking class starting this fall semester.\u00a0 The new course is co-sponsored by the Pacific Crest Trail Association and Mt. Shasta Trail Association and is an introduction to the basic skills needed to safely enjoy hiking and backpacking opportunities in our area. Focus will be on the more traditional backpacking skills as well as \u201cfastpacking\u201d, the new way of traveling fast and super light. Registration is now open and space is still available.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1988\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/03\/backpacking-and-hiking-class-at-college-of-the-siskiyous-this-fall\/charlie-unkefer\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1988\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1988 \" title=\"Charlie Unkefer, instructor of College of the Siskiyous Backpacking and Hiking Class\" src=\"http:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/charlie-unkefer.jpg\" alt=\"Charlie Unkefer, instructor of College of the Siskiyous Backpacking and Hiking Class\" width=\"216\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlie Unkefer, instructor of College of the Siskiyous Backpacking and Hiking Class<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Taught by Charlie Unkefer, the class includes a one-night lecture, two Friday day hikes, and one overnight weekend backpack trip<\/strong>.\u00a0 Unkefer\u2019s experience includes 30 years of backpacking adventures and five years as a professional mountain guide.\u00a0 His intimate wilderness knowledge includes exploring the secret places along the Pacific Crest Trail, and in the Trinity Alps, the Marble Mountains, <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/24\/castle-crags-park-hiking-trails-camping-history\/\">Castle Crags State Park<\/a>, and the Mt. Shasta Wilderness Area.\u00a0 Unkefer will also be teaching leadership and guiding skills along with helping students explore a career in professional guiding and outdoor recreation jobs if desired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is well liked,\u201d says Joy Taylor, COS Program Coordinator.\u00a0 \u201cThe students will just enjoy being around Charlie while they gain greater confidence for their next backcountry hiking and<a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/dispersed-camping-boondocking-book-camp-free\/\"> dispersed camping trips<\/a>.\u00a0 Students will be updated on the latest \u201cleave no trace\u201d techniques of adventuring in the outdoors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will just be a fun class for whoever signs up,\u201d Unkefer says.\u00a0 \u201cIt really is an excellent opportunity for folks who have hiked before to cultivate the skills necessary to safely and comfortably go on extended overnight trips. Concepts such as traveling lightly, leaving no trace, being acutely aware of one\u2019s surroundings, being resourceful, and conserving resources will be discussed and practiced in more depth for both on the trail and use in our day-to-day lives.\u00a0 If you\u2019re in the tourism industry, learning outdoor skills and getting to know the area better may enhance your familiarity and outreach efforts.\u00a0 I also think some people will sign up because it is just fun to learn together and meet new people on adventures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate our partnership with College of the Siskiyous,\u201d says Liz Bergeron, Executive Director of Pacific Crest Trail Association and co-sponsor of the program. \u201cWe hope that together we can motivate others to get out and enjoy the Pacific Crest Trail. \u00a0Through these partnerships we hope to raise awareness about our important work and cultivate future trail stewards.\u201d \u00a0For more information about the Pacific Crest Trail Association go to www.pcta.org.<\/p>\n<p>John Soares, local hiking author and board member of the Mt.
