It also makes an excellent short day hike, which is what Stephanie and I did late Thursday afternoon after a delicious lunch at Strings in the town of Mount Shasta.<\/p>\n<h2>The Trail from Bunny Flat to Horse Camp<\/h2>\n<p>The path climbs gently through Shasta red fir forest. There are occasional open views of surrounding mountains, including Mount Eddy and other notable summits in the <a href=\"https:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/category\/trinity-divide-mountains-hiking-and-backpacking-trails\/\">Trinity Divide Mountains<\/a>, but the main highlight is the wildflowers, which are peaking now. (No pictures of those &#8212; sorry!)<\/p>\n<h2>Horse Camp, Beginning of the Avalanche Gulch Route Up Mount Shasta<\/h2>\n<p>Horse Camp, owned and run by the Sierra Club, is a great one-day destination because of its stunning views of the route to Lake Helen, the Heart, and Red Cliffs. <a href=\"http:\/\/shastaavalanche.org\/general-route-description\/avalanche-gulch\">Mount Shasta summit climbers<\/a> frequently camp here (for a fee), and there&#8217;s also delicious spring water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1062\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1062\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/northerncaliforniahikingtrails.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/22\/hiking-to-horse-camp-on-mount-shasta\/mount-shasta-horse-camp-sierra-club-building\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1062\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1062\" title=\"Sierra Club building at Horse Camp on Mount Shasta. (Photo by John Soares)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Olberman&#8217;s Causeway and Avalanche Gulch<\/h2>\n<p>Once you get to Horse Camp and you&#8217;re summit bound, you finally see what lies ahead of you, for the most part.
