Backpacking Russian Wilderness Trails with Thom Gabrukiewicz

by John Soares on September 4, 2010

Thom Gabrukiewicz is well-known in far northern California from his many years as a writer for the Redding Record-Searchlight.

And Thom’s also a hiking guide writer, and we even share the same publisher: The Mountaineers Books. Check out Thom’s book on the publisher’s site here, or on Amazon here.

But today I’m most interested in Thom’s recent hiking adventure in the Russian Wilderness:

Spent a week within the Russian Wilderness Area, in far Northern California. Six friends, six backpacks, and 12,000 acres to play in. We call ourselves the Beefaloes. Fairly obvious why.

Thom and his pals primarily explored the area around Paynes Lake, a place I know well. Here’s a couple of pics Thom graciously allowed me to share:

That last shot is a winner Thom!

I sure agree – that last pic makes me feel like I am there! This is definitely one of our favorite areas in California (maybe because it so close to Oregon – heh).

Roy, I haven’t made it to Russian Wilderness yet this year, but I’m hoping to do a at least a day hike this fall.
