Last week I had a post about the previous weekend’s climbing accidents on Mount Shasta. Well, this past weekend brought even more accidents and injuries that Mount Shasta Ranger Station rangers responded to, primarily on the Avalanche Gulch route.
The Mount Shasta Herald has a good piece by Skye Kincade on exactly what happened on the mountain:
Lead climbing ranger Eric White said there were as many incidences on the mountain Saturday and Sunday as there are in an entire season some years.
Three major factors were to blame for the accidents, including falling ice, strong winds, and snow that was firm, smooth and treacherous for those who stumbled and fell.
A total of nine climbers were assisted off of Mt. Shasta over the two days, White said, including five on Saturday and four on Sunday.
Be very careful if you’re climbing on Mount Shasta. This is a treacherous time of year, especially after the heavy snows of winter and spring.
See last week’s post for resources to help you.
