Mount Shasta Climber Thomas Bennett Dies

by John Soares on April 2, 2010

Very sad situation that all Mount Shasta area residents have been following closely. Thomas Bennett of Oakland died near the summit of Mount Shasta:

A black metal avalanche probe stuck in the icy snow 100 yards from Mt. Shasta’s summit Thursday morning pointed searchers to a snow cave holding a climber stranded there since Saturday.

In the cave, they found the frozen body of Thomas Bennett Jr., 26, of Oakland, said Siskiyou County Sheriff Rick Riggins.

His climbing partner – Mark Thomas, 26, of Berkeley – also stayed in the cave Saturday night, but then left Bennett behind Sunday night when it appeared he’d died.

My deepest sympathies to Mr. Bennett’s family and friends.
