The Siskiyou Wanderers, an intrepid hiking group in Siskiyou County, will revel in spectacular fall color on this month’s hikes. Feel free to join them!
October 1: Tangle Blue Lake:
As summer fades into fall and you are feeling a little blue, visit Tangle Blue Lake, a popular lake near Scott Mountain Summit, and I am sure the blues will fade pretty fast. For those wishing to drive over Parks Creek Summit, meet those coming from Callahan at about 9:30 am or so at the junction of Hwy 3 and Tangle Blue Ck Rd. AD: 7 miles THE: 4,620′ AEG: 1,125′ PMP: Callahan T: 9:00 am.
October 8: Gray Rock Lake:
Above Lake Siskiyou, this pretty lake sits in a granite bowl. It has trout, so bring your fishing rods, and there are some side hikes if one likes to explore a little. Some road walking. AD: 7 miles THE: 4,900′ AEG: 1,180′ PMP: Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery T: 9:00 am.
October 15: Fish Lake and Twin Lakes:
Have not done these lakes since 2002. I don’t know much about these lakes, but the names are suggestive. Hopefully fall colors will be in full display. AD: 6+ miles THE: 5,090′ AEG: 1000′/1,600′ respectively PMP: Callahan T: 9:00 am.
October 22: Hidden Valley:
One of Suzanne’s favorite places on the mountain, nestled between Shastina and Mt. Shasta, above Horse Camp…dramatic setting, great views. Rough trail above Horse Camp. NO DOGS PLEASE. AD: 8+ miles THE: 6,900′ AEG: 2,300′ PMP: Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery T: 9:00 am.
October 29: Masterson Meadows & Grouse Creek Lakes:
A nice fall hike from Hwy 3 at Scott Mountain Summit, going east on the Pacific Crest Trail to these lovely lakes in the Scott Mountain vicinity, thence return via Scott Mountain. Some cross-country. AD: 8+ miles THE: 5,400′ AEG: 1,450′ PMP: Callahan T: 9:00 am.
