Just got an important update from Robin Kohn, author of Mount Shasta Guide to Fun:
Road 26 also known as South Fork Road to Gumboot Lake is closed right past the turn off to Toad Lake/Morgan Meadows up to the Fawn Creek Bridge. Road work is taking place throughout the month. They have been having the road open on the weekends. Alternate way is up Red Hill Road or going around Road 25 out of Castella to Road 26. It’s a very scenic and paved loop to Gumboot Lake.
This is the main road that accesses Trinity Divide Mountains hiking trails, including Cliff Lake, Gumboot Lake, Gumboot Saddle, and the Pacific Crest Trail to Seven Lakes Basin, and it’s definitely the most direct route.
For more information on the status of Road 26/South Fork Road, call the Mount Shasta Ranger Station at 530-926-4511.

They’ve also opened the road on the weekday evenings I’ve been through there.
Unfortunately, they don’t take down the “Road Closed Ahead” signs when the road is really open.
Hope that doesn’t cause somebody an unnecessary detour.
