Summer’s still sizzlin’ so get your sweaty self up into the coolness of the high mountains in Siskiyou County with one of these top-notch Thursday hikes with the Siskiyou Wanderers.

August 6: Taylor, Hogan and Big Blue Lakes:
Hike from Taylor Creek trail-head to Taylor and Hogan Lakes. Those with more ambition can hike cross country to the one of the most beautiful lakes in the Salmon Mountains. Elevation gain and loss in both directions. AD: 8+ miles THE: 6,400′ AEG: 1,200′ PMP: Bob’s Ranch House, Etna T: 8:30 am.
Aug 13: Castle Lake and Heart Lake:
Enjoy the trek to a peak above Castle and Heart Lakes to a wonderful overlook of Castle Crags. Those wishing to hike a little more can include Little Castle Lake in your trek. If you wish bring your swimsuit for a swim after the hike. There’s not a better way to enjoy the summer. AD: 6+ miles THE: 5,900′ AEG: 1,500′ PMP: Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery. T: 8:30 am.
Aug 20: North Gate:
Drive up Military Pass road to the North Gate trailhead. Hike up the northern flanks of Mt. Shasta to the base camp for Hotlum and Bolum routes. Spectacular views of Shasta Valley and glaciers to be had by all. Fine trail recently constructed. AD: 5-6 miles THE: 7,200′ AEG: 2,200′ PMP: Highway 97 & A12. T: 8:30 am.
Aug 27: Horseshoe Lake:
See not just more conifers, but more varieties of conifers than is typical of Siskiyou County or most other places, for that matter. Bring your favorite potluck dish to share and enjoy a potluck at Robbie and Richard Vandewater’s place at 9516 Azalea Dr on French Creek afterwards.
