The Shasta-Trinity National Forest recently released an update on trail conditions for the Trinity Alps. Overall the outlook is quite good for summer backpacking in the Trinities, assuming we don’t have another nasty fire season. However, the report is still incomplete, so call ahead before you head out.
And I’m happy to report that the six Trinity Alps hikes in 100 Classic Hikes in Northern California are in relatively good shape:
Hike 56: Big Bear Lake
Hike 57: Caribou, Emerald, and Sapphire Lakes
Hike 58: Horseshoe and Ward Lakes
Hike 59: Granite Lake and Seven Up Gap
Hike 60: Four Lakes Loop
Hike 61: Canyon Creek Lakes and Boulder Creek Lakes

one summer early 60s spent a week in cabin ( outhouse, kerosene lamps, wood stove, hand-pumped well ) 5 miles outside Peanut. neighbors had small sluice there. my buddy and i waded and hiked for miles down the river. i had joe brooks first book but no money for gear so we used mitchell 304s and super-dupers for all the trout we could handle. during that whole time we didn’t see another human. magical experience. i was 11 years old.
