Improving Our Trails: Box Canyon Trail and Castle Crags State Park Nature Trail

by John Soares on November 29, 2008

The Mount Shasta Trail Association recently did some important maintenance on local trails: the Box Canyon Trail near Lake Siskiyou and the town of Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County, and the Castle Crags State Park Nature Trail in Shasta County. Here’s the skinny from the Mount Shasta Trail Association website:

Recently a team of Mount Shasta Trail Association members completed rehabilitation of the scenic Box Canyon Trail that courses gently through the forest along the southern boundary of the Mt. Shasta Golf Resort at the top of the bluff overlooking the Sacramento River. “They resolved a persistent mud problem on one section of the trail with a drainage system involving digging in rock hard clay to install a French drain, and transporting drainage rocks to the work site by wheelbarrow,” said Joe Wirth, President of the MSTA. “They also extended the trail, improved the tread, and pruned vegetation. The trail should now be in great shape for the next 5-10 years. The materials for this work and use of a Bobcat were donated by Timberworks. We owe them our thanks! When you have some time, check out the trail. It has great views of the Sacramento River Canyon.”

On the prior workday another MSTA team of eleven spent the day working on the Nature Trail in Castle Crags State Park. “This is the most used trail in the park and was in need of attention mainly due to water erosion at various points along the trail,” Wirth said. “The team put in a considerable number of water bars to stop further erosion, restored the tread in the most eroded areas and made the trailhead more presentable. We will return in the spring to do some further work on this trail when a new descriptive trail brochure is completed.”

Here’s a photo of the Box Canyon Trail maintenance taken by Mark Gibson, a full-time professional photographer who is (like me) on the board of directors of the Mount Shasta Trail Association. (Check out www.MarkGibsonPhoto.com to see his thousands of great pics.)
