Plumas County, located just south of Lassen Volcanic National Park, east of Red Bluff, and northeast of Chico (think Quincy and Chester and Lake Almanor), is an excellent destination this time of year. The fall colors are peaking, and you can explore one of the most beautiful counties in California. Here’s what the Plumas County Visitor’s Bureau says:
It’s a stunning show that Mother Nature provides in the Northern Sierra, from streambed to mountaintop. Bright hues of orange, red and yellow contrast against dark green conifers, gray granite and blue skies. Check the daily leaf-peeper reports to take in the best foliage-viewing routes, and to find where color’s happening when you make your visit.
Autumn brings on a cooler, more tranquil season for venturing outdoors. Hear the leaves scrunch underfoot along a uncrowded hiking trail. Ride a bike, or head for a golf course or fishing hole.
The website also has a ton of information on activities in Plumas County, including hiking. Contact the Visitor’s Bureau and ask for your free copy of the Plumas County Hiking Guide.
My Sweetie Stephanie and I were in Plumas County in early September for her birthday. We hiked in Lassen Volcanic National Park and stayed at the Bidwell House Bed and Breakfast in Chester near Lake Almanor.

When visiting Lassen Park or the Lake Almanor Basin
the St. Bernard Lodge is a great place to stay. It is only
1.4 miles from the Pacific Crest Trail. Hiking, ATV’s, Snowmobiling or Horseback riding are all possible from the lodge.
