The Politics of Fall Foliage in Northern California

by John Soares on October 28, 2008

I found this excellent article by William Tomicki on how to find beautiful autumn colors in the mountains throughout California on www.HumanEvents.com “Leading the Conservative Movement Since 1944.” I’d like Americans (and everyone everywhere) to put aside the politics of division whenever possible and see what we all have in common: a connection to nature.

Here’s what the article says about Lassen County, Shasta County, Trinity County, and Siskiyou County:

In Lassen County, biking enthusiasts can take part in the Fall Color Bike Rides, up to 25 miles, available along the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail that traverses a remote area inaccessible by cars. Old railroad tunnels and bridges along the trail enhance the beauty of the surrounding area. Some of the most breathtaking fall colors can be viewed in Castle Crags State Park in Shasta County, 6 miles south of Dunsmuir on Interstate 5. Travelers can also enjoy the beauty of the outdoors from the comfort of their vehicles on Highway 299 in Shasta County through the historic town of Old Shasta and down to Whiskeytown Lake. Day hikes are ideal in Tehama County’s Ishi Wilderness Area and its 48,000 acres of changing vegetation. Events celebrating California’s fall foliage and include Autumn in the Alps, taking place from September 28 to October 31 in historic Weaverville.

The site itself is very conservative. The first picture I saw was an ad for a stock-picking outfit that featured Ann Coulter looking right at me, as if she knows I have impure political thoughts. (That outfit might want to update the ad: NovaStar Financial flamed out in the subprime crisis and now trades for four bits a share on the pink sheets.) And Human Events folks seem to think global warming is only a scare campaign by liberals so they can get control over everybody’s lives.

But I think we all agree – whatever our political persuasions may be - that autumn is a beautiful time of year. So let’s spend at least a little time outside relaxing, breathing the crisp air, and enjoying all that ephemeral color.

John,

You lost me on that stock stuff (“4 bits on the pink sheets”). And I’m not familiar with that Ann Colpa person. But yes, autumn is a beautiful time of year, just perfect for hiking.

Aloha Erikoy,

The stock’s down to 50 cents, and it no longer trades on one of the major stock exchanges.

Ann Coulter is one of the most prominent conservative commentators in America, well-known for her provocative statements.

I’m gonna do a short hike today, despite the wind and rain.
